Before delving into the events world, I studied property at university and worked in property for the first few years of my working life, considering whether to go down the chartered surveying route. For my sins, and probably my parents frustrations, owning and running an events company has also always been something I have wanted to do. Even from the early years of summer marquee work which should have probably put me off, rather than attract me.
Starting One Six Events was the perfect idea, using what was a combined 10+ years in the industry, now nearly 20 years. Rich and I felt this meant we could build our company from the ground up and create something brilliant. Our work ethos being a key ingredient, and the customer service levels we wanted to bring means we look after our clients just how we would expect to be treated. Of course, not forgetting one main objective was to enjoy the process and have a laugh along the way, which we have definitely met, and long may that continue! This is so important in life, cheesy I know, but it means all those hours spent working (and there’s a few), don’t really feel like work!
I have worked within the events industry advising clients for many years. I thoroughly enjoy the first meeting with clients and love working with them building their wedding or event from the initial brief and bettering expectations – that’s our aim. We love a challenge, and it’s not very often we can’t find a solution.
When time allows, other passions include water sports, having taught it for many summers in North Cornwall, golf, running and the odd triathlon, catching up with friends and spending time with my family. We head to Cornwall when we can, which ends up being mainly out of season now, but that’s the nature of the beast.
I grew up in Tilford, Farnham and I currently live in Guildford with my wife Sarah, son Monty and dachshund Olive – who is soon to be joined by a working cocker spaniel puppy! Sarah and I were married in a church in North Cornwall in May, 2018 and guess what? The reception was held in a big tent on the sea front, where we met – Rock! So as a groom, I built my own venue and, I’m told to this day, that I managed client expectations well!
So, we’re working on those elements we don’t usually have time for, helping us to build on those ‘behind the scenes’ aspects of One Six Events, in order to improve our customer experience and much more. Our newest and already very integral part of the team, Steph, is largely helping with these, and you’ll hear more from her in the coming weeks.
We all hope that this will be over soon, and like you, we are looking forwards to a stonker of a ‘social gathering’. We look forwards to normality returning, organising a few events and building some marquees. See you on the other side.
